In the Common Year 575, in the Free City of Greyhawk, I, Alisdair, am your humble servant. I have written a treatise on all that is the Flanaess. Including my own work as well as the work of several of my fellow scholars, we have attempted to assemble a compleat work, known as an encyclopedia. You will find our entries below, and I will add more as our research continues to come in.

The World

The greatest diviners, both living and dead have revealed that Oerth is shaped like a large round ball. Of course, this matters little to the commoners, even if they believe it. What they do know is that our corner of Oerth is known as the Flanaess and a fine home it is. We have have little contact with other civilizations on Oerth, probably because we were cut off from the rest of them by the Invoked Devastation and the Rain of Colorless Fire. Of course, the commoners care naught for such things as strangers beyond the reach of of everyone but the most westerly of the Baklunish nations. Even they have but sparse and periodic contact with a few of those distant nations.

The Sky

On the other, it doesn't take a diviner to figure out that the sun revolves around the Oerth and everyone knows that Oerth's two moons, Luna and Celene do so as well. In addition to the sun and moons there are seven wandering stars that grace the heavens, Edill (white), Gnibile (red), Conatha (blue), Ginsei (green), Borka (brown), Greela (green) and the Spectre, also known as The Wink because it seems to twinkle and disappear regularly from the night sky. Unlike the other stars that appear in the same positions each night, the wandering stars stride across the heavens.

Time

In the Flanaess, years are called dozenmonths. Each of the 12 months (Fireseek, Readying, Coldeven, Planting, Flocktime, Wealsun, Reaping, Goodmonth, Harvester, Patchwall, Ready'reat, Sunsebb) consists of 28 days broken into 4 weeks. Every 3 months there is a festival week, which divides the dozenmonth into 4 seasons. As everyone knows, Celene is only full on Godsday in each of the festival weeks. Luna, on the other hand, has a cycle that is exactly 1 month long. Because of the 4 festival weeks (Growfest, Richfest, Brewfest, Needfest), the full night for Luna wanders from one week to the next with each passing season, but it always falls on Godsday.

Furthermore, most of the countries in the Flanaess use a common set names for the seven days of the week. Starday, Sunday and Moonday, are each work days, Godsday is a a worship day, Waterday and Earthday are also work days and the last day, Freeday, is a day of rest.
